Ruby Rose has been tapped to replace Elliot Page in Kyle Newman’s upcoming gamer comedy film 1Up, set in the world of professional esports.
Ruby Rose has stepped in to replace Elliot Page, who has officially withdrawn from the upcoming gamer comedy film 1Up.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Ruby Rose will be replacing Elliot Page in the Lionsgate and BuzzFeed collaboration directed by Kyle Newman, best known for his road trip comedy Fanboys. Rose will now star alongside Paris Berelc (Hubie Halloween) in the underdog comedy movie that tells the story of pro gamer Valerie Lee (Berelc), who is fed up with the unrelenting sexism of her college esports team. To hang onto her scholarship, Lee enlists the help of her professor and mentor, Parker Nesby, as well as her best friend Sloane, to assemble an all-female team of expert gamers to take down the boys that tried to shut them out of gaming in the first place.Continue scrolling to keep reading

It was previously reported that Page would play Professor Nesby who, at Lee’s request, accepts the role of the girl’s team’s coach. At this time, Page has not given a reason for his withdrawal from the film, which is now in production in Toronto.

The upcoming film, written by Julia Yorks, will explore themes related to the #GamerGate harassment campaign that infamously targeted prominent female members of the gaming community with death threats, rape threats and doxing. BuzzFeed’s SVP of global content and head of studio Richard Alan Reid said “1UP is a fresh, authentic comedy with important social commentary, featuring a diverse cast of hugely talented and often underrepresented voices.” This project is intended to be the first of many socially relevant feature films developed by Lionsgate and BuzzFeed geared towards millennial and Gen Z audiences.
Rose and Page have both been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ representation. Rose has made waves playing the lesbian lead, Kate Kane (aka Batwoman) on the CW before stepping down due to concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as well as a serious back injury. Page’s recent announcement in which they came out as transgender and nonbinary has been described as an important step for trans representation in media following decades in which trans characters have been depicted as jokes or villains.
Directed by Kyle Newman and written by Julia Yorks, 1Up stars Paris Berelc, Ruby Rose, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Hari Nef and Nicholas Coombe.
