2021 is already a busy time for Priyanka Chopra as not only her film The White Tiger releasing tomorrow, i.e. January 21, but our desi girl is also gearing up for the release of her highly-anticipated memoir Unfinished which comes out on February 9. In a recent candid interview with People, PeeCee was brutally honest as she shared her experience of facing racist bullying at the tender age of just 15 while attending an American high school.

Chopra recalled how she took the bullying very personally as deep inside, it started gnawing at her and she went into a shell. Priyanka didn’t want people to look at her as she hoped to be invisible. “My confidence was stripped. I’ve always considered myself a confident person, but I was very unsure of where I stood, of who I was,” the 38-year-old actress confessed. In Unfinished, Chopra recounts how other teenage girls in her school would hurl insults like, ‘Brownie, go back to your country!’ or ‘Go back on the elephant you came on’ when she walked down the hall.

As escapism from the harsh treatment, Priyanka tried her best to ignore the bullies and sought refuge within a close group of friends while also reaching out to the guidance counsellor for help. Alas, it was no avail. While PeeCee doesn’t blame the city, she feels that her bullies, at that young age, just wanted to say something that would hurt. Now, at the other side of 35, Chopra theorises that the bullying was probably coming from a place of the girls being “insecure” but nonetheless, at that time, the actress took it very personally.

Not being able to handle any more of the bullying, Priyanka decided to break up with America and after a call with her parents, returned back to India. “I was so blessed that when I went back to India, I was surrounded by so much love and admiration for who I was. Going back to India healed me after that experience in high school,” the Citadel star revealed while adding that she took her father’s advice and decided to leave her baggage behind.

“In America, I was trying not to be different. Right? I was trying to fit in and I wanted to be invisible. When I went to India, I chose to be different,” Chopra concluded.
