Disney+ subscribers, prepare for even more Muppets as all five seasons of the original The Muppet Show will be available to stream from February 19.
The Muppet Show originally ran between 1976 and 1981, airing on syndication in the U.S. and on ITV in the U.K.
Disney+ said it’s the first time that the fourth and fifth seasons of the comedy have been released for home entertainment.
“It’s going to be great to welcome back longtime fans, and to give a new generation of fans a chance to see how we got our start, how Miss Piggy became a star and so much more,” a Disney press release quoted Kermit the Frog as saying.
“Today, I’m proud to say: ‘It’s time to play the music, light the lights and meet the Muppets on Disney Plus
tonight!’ And as for Statler and Waldorf, the two old guys in the balcony, I can only add: ‘Sorry, guys, but….here we go again.”
The popular variety sketch comedy show featured A-list guests including Liza Minnelli, Mark Hamill and Julie Andrews during its five-year stint.
The Muppet Show joins other Muppet fare on Disney+, including the original series Muppets Now, a modern spin on the older variety show that launched last year and introduced two new Muppets, Joe the Legal Weasel and Beverly Plume. Muppets Now, continuing in the franchise’s great tradition of guest stars, featured RuPaul, Taye Diggs, Linda Cardellini and Seth Rogen as guest stars in its first season.
Disney+ is also home to various Muppet movies, including the recent hits The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted, and the single season of the short-lived 2015 mockumentary-style sitcom, The Muppets.
Not part of the Disney+ lineup—yet—is the 1990s Muppets Tonight variety series that aired on ABC and Disney Channel from 1996 to 1998. The show’s guests included Prince, Sandra Bullock and Garth Brooks.
